Live waxing performance. Solo Show Dual Channel Waxing Salon, 2020. Post-Territory Ujeongguk, Seoul, Korea.

Dual Channel Waxing Salon is a dual-operating space where sculptural installations and a live full-body waxing performance are simultaneously presented. The exhibition is divided into two rooms. In the Waxing Room, a male professional aesthetician performed full-body waxing on 13 male models throughout the exhibition period. In the Room for Objects, sculptural installations made of reactive substances slowly decayed and fractured due to ongoing chemical reactions. The spatial juxtaposition of these two varying orientations, the spectacle of the naked body being stripped of hair and the decaying objects, unsettles the tightly woven association between beauty and hygiene, and projects a disquietude.

Studio Grove, 2016. 8-month outdoor installation and performance project, Songchu-dong hillside rest area, Seoul, Korea. Photography by Jaepil Eun

“In the spring of 2016, I started an outdoor installation project at a neglected rest area on the hillside for eight months. I occupied the abandoned space to extend my art practice outside of institutional spaces, and furthermore, to see if this unpredictable physicality of nature could be used as a material. I added treated timber and metal beams to the original structure and responded to various interferences of the wilderness, such as fierce weeds, tangled thorns, heavy rain, burning sunlight, and the darkness of the night. If I built a pillar, a vine would climb around it overnight, and if I installed a wall, swarms of ants would build their own nest below it. As the wilderness strongly interfered with the controllability and sustainability of my installation, attempts at refinement and polishing continuously failed, and the space transformed into something ambivalent and peculiar. This meant that its completion was far out of my reach. That year, on a very cold day in December, all living things were gone. When nature finally welcomed my installation and performance into the wood, I invited the audience into the metamorphic space.”
